The May edition of UNSW Galleries' monthly event First Friday, Post-Sex Sex will investigate the post-pornographic moment – a moment defined, in part, by the critical impact of technology on biopolitical and erotic life.
Artists and writers are differently exploring the hypermediation of bodies and sex under late capitalism, theorising variously utopian and dystopian concepts of the post-human body, the post-pornographic image, sex without bodies, sex after extinction, queer negativity and radical futurity.
Post-Sex Sex will explore post-pornography in some of these modes through a collaborative discussion between Tim Gregory and Astrid Lorange on the spectacular image of the post-porn body; a chopped-and-screwed DJ set by Andrew Brooks that deviates the sublimity of the slow jam; a participatory encounter that engages with the inscriptive gesture of random online, webcam sex; and a video by Penelope Benton and Alexandra Clapham that imagines a queer baroque retrofuture.
Post-Sex Sex will ask: how does desire circulate in a political moment so thoroughly bonded to the circulation of desire as economic fact?
Curated by Dr. Tim Gregory and Dr. Astrid Lorange.
First Fridays is a recently launched regular program of curated events at UNSW Galleries. Held on the first Friday of each month, the galleries will open after hours to host a series of lively events engaging ideas in contemporary art and culture.
