‘Deeptime coastline’ is an offsite public programming series involving walking events and discussions held at important sites across the Illawarra coastal region. The program expands upon the exhibition ‘Bianca Hester: Lithic Bodies’ held at UNSW Galleries (27 September – 24 November 2024) and Clifton School of Arts (12–27 October 2024).
These interdisciplinary walks and symposium bring together a range of specialists and knowledge holders to explore the ecologies, temporalities, and narratives surrounding the Illawarra escarpment and coastline on Dharawal Land. Curated and produced by Bianca Hester and Bronwyn Bailey-Charteris in collaboration with Matt Poll, the program aims to address the multiple ways that this complex landscape can be better understood and cared for in the context of a rapidly changing climate.
INTERDISCIPLINARY WALKING EVENTS
SHARK!
10.30am–12.30pm Sunday 13 October 2024
Meet at Coledale Beach Reserve
Register
Led by social and cultural geographer Leah Gibbs, this walk explores the underwater world from the shore. Beginning at Coledale Beach Reserve, we’ll be looking out to sea to consider how we negotiate our relationships with animals that spark both awe and fear: sharks. The walk questions narratives that have pitted humans and sharks against each other. Together, we’ll consider ways of relating with the ocean to imagine other possible futures.
Sacred land
1.00–3.00pm Saturday 19 October 2024
Meet at Sandon Point Carpark (Corner of Point St and Blackall St, Bulli)
Register
This walk is led by Uncle Peter Button, a respected Aboriginal Elder, environmental and cultural advocate. He was awarded Wollongong Aboriginal Male Elder of the Year 2022, is a co-founding member and caretaker of the embassy at Sandon Point and the current chair of the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council. Uncle Peter will share his knowledge of, and ongoing engagement with, Sandon Point in Bulli. This place is a sacred site for gathering and ceremony for over millennia, which continues to hold enormous significance in the Illawarra.
Remnant forest ecosystems of the Illawarra Escarpment
10.00am–12.00pm Sunday 20 October 2024
Meet at Bulli Pass
(For those without car transport meet 9.30am at Thirroul Railway Station)
Register
Led by Leon Fuller and Emma Rooksby, co-instigators of the Growing Illawarra Natives project, this walk will lead us through a pocket of rainforest situated on the Illawarra Escarpment, southwards from Bulli Pass. This track, on the upper bench of the escarpment, winds through eucalypt forest and Illawarra Subtropical Rainforest. Leon and Emma will reveal the highly diverse ecologies of the understorey which points to the future of the rainforest, where today’s seedlings mature into tomorrow’s canopy trees. The walk will involve a mix of on-track and off-track walking, guided by local topography, vegetation, and paths visible to us as we make our way through the forest.
Please note: sturdy walking boots, long pants, long sleeved shirt, hat, water bottle and insect repellent are strongly advised. The terrain can be steep and slippery in some places so please ensure you are at a moderate level of fitness.
