Learn more about the work of Hazara artist Khadim Ali in a conversation with exhibition curator and Institute of Modern Art Director Liz Nowell.
Khadim Ali is one of Australia’s most acclaimed artists, known for his masterful works that poetically explore the experience of displaced people across the globe. A member of the persecuted Hazara ethnic minority, Ali is the third generation of his family to be exiled from his homeland of Afghanistan. After growing up in Pakistan as a refugee, Ali studied traditional miniature painting at the prestigious Lahore National College of Arts, before migrating to Australia in 2009. Ali’s works have been included in the recent Lahore Biennale (2019–20); Dhaka Art Summit (2018); Biennale de Lyon (2017); and ‘The National: New Australian Art’, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (2017).
Liz Nowell is an arts leader and curator with over ten years’ experience working in Australian and international contemporary art. Before joining the Institute of Modern Art in 2019, Liz was the founding CEO of Adelaide’s leading contemporary art space, ACE Open and Executive Director of the Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia. Previously, she has held positions at Sydney College of the Arts, Hazelhurst Regional Gallery & Arts Centre, SafARI, Tandanya – National Aboriginal Cultural Institute and UNSW Art & Design. Her curatorial projects include 'Khadim Ali: Invisible Border' (2021); 'Next Matriarch', co-curated with Kimberley Moulton (2017); 'putsch: proppaNOW' (2010) and 'The Violet Ballet' by Sally Smart (2019).
