'Emerging' and 'early career' are terms that don't speak to a single point in an art career. To start on the road to an art practice doesn't mean an uninterrupted flow - how do artists define themselves as fitting within these descriptions?
This panel is moderated by Executive Director of NAVA, Esther Anatolitis, exhibiting artists Chelsea Lehmann, Shireen Taweel and Emily Parsons-Lord are joined by Coordinator of Parramatta Artists Studios, Sophia Kouyoumdjian.
Esther Anatolitis is a writer and curator, and one of Australia’s leading advocates for arts, culture and the creative industries. Her leadership, facilitative and consultancy work promotes a critical reflection on practice and active civic engagement.
Chelsea Lehmann is an artist and academic. Synthesising art conservation imaging practices with painting techniques, Lehmann's work reveals the materiality and processes behind painting to enhance aesthetic and affective registers of tactility.
Shireen Taweel is a multimedia installation artist whose work broaches issues of the construction of cultural heritage, knowledge and identity through language and the constantly shifting public space of the social, political and religious axiom.
Emily Parsons-Lord is an artist who makes ephemeral installations and performances that are informed by research and critical dialogue with climate sciences, natural history, and politics.
Sophia Kouyoumdjian is the Coordinator of Parramatta Artists Studios, who supports artists in reframing the every day as they make their mark on Parramatta's diverse cultural landscape.
