A re-creation of Ralph Balson’s landmark 1941 exhibition at Anthony Horderns’ Fine Art Galleries, Sydney, the first one-person exhibition of abstract painting in Australia.
The 1941 exhibition marked the beginning of his ‘Constructive Paintings’, geometric abstractions employing overlapping planes of colour. Balson’s exhibition has been extremely influential on subsequent generations of Australian artists. Ivan Dougherty Gallery Director Nick Waterlow pointed out, “It was a key moment when a new paradigm emerged, an example of a genuine, home grown, Australian Modernism.”
